How Granite Slab Thickness Affects Fabrication
2 cm versus 3 cm is a structural decision, not just a cost line. What thickness changes about spans, edges, weight and installation.
Thickness is one of the first specifications on any granite order, and it cascades through every downstream decision: allowable spans, edge treatment, weight, transport and installed cost.
3 cm: the U.S. countertop standard
3 cm (about 1¼ in) material spans typical cabinet runs and moderate overhangs without a subtop, presents a substantial edge without lamination, and tolerates handling during fabrication and installation. Most U.S. fabricators build their countertop workflow around it.
2 cm: lighter, cheaper, more supported
2 cm (about ¾ in) reduces material cost and weight — meaningful in vertical cladding, furniture and prefab vanity programs — but usually needs edge lamination to present a thicker profile and more supervision on spans and overhangs. It is the standard in many international markets and in U.S. prefab programs.
Thicker gauges
5 cm and heavier material appears in stair treads, landscape work, monuments and statement islands. Weight rises fast: a 3 cm slab already runs roughly 18–19 pounds per square foot, and 5 cm proportionally more — which drives crating, container loading and site-handling plans.
Confirm thickness tolerance with your supplier as well: calibrated material with tight tolerance saves fabrication time on lamination and seams.
