Granite vs. Quartz for Commercial Projects
Heat, UV, repairability and lifecycle cost — how the two materials actually compare once a project leaves the showroom.
Engineered quartz has taken a large share of residential countertops, but the calculus changes in commercial work. Heat exposure, UV, repairability and lifecycle cost all behave differently at project scale.
Where granite wins
Heat: granite tolerates hot cookware and equipment that would scorch or crack a resin-bound quartz surface — relevant for commercial kitchens, coffee bars and buffet lines. UV: granite is colorfast outdoors and behind glass curtain walls; most quartz products are not warranted for exterior or high-UV exposure. Repairability: granite can be re-polished in place after years of service; damaged quartz usually means replacement.
Granite is also a natural product with no resin content, which matters for some sustainability and fire-rating specifications.
Where quartz wins
Quartz offers engineered consistency — every slab matches the sample — plus non-porous surfaces that never need sealing, and a wide range of manufactured whites that natural stone cannot reproduce. For food-service counters where hygiene certification is specified, non-porosity is a genuine advantage.
The practical rule
Specify granite where heat, UV, exterior exposure or long-term repairability matter, and where natural material character is part of the design intent. Specify quartz where absolute color consistency and zero-maintenance porosity control the decision. Many successful projects use both — granite at feature and heavy-duty surfaces, quartz in back-of-house.
